NBS alumni, Nicole Shumate and Katherine James, were selected for and have chosen to attend this summer’s residential Governor’s School at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. Each summer, 400 students in Virginia who have exhibited exceptional ability in their particular discipline are invited to participate in the Governor’s School for Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts.  This intensive four-week program of classes, workshops, field trips, and special events is designed to encourage students’ individual growth as well as to challenge them to achieve personal excellence in their fields.  Nicole Shumate was selected for the Visual & Performing Arts program, and Katherine James for the Humanites program.

To be selected to participate in the Governor’s School, students must first be nominated by their local high school.  Visual and Performing Arts applicants participate in a statewide audition, while Humanities applicants complete an extensive essay.  All applicants submit teacher recommendations.  Their applications are then sent to a statewide selection process where they compete with students from across the Commonwealth.  An invitation to the Governor’s School for Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts is a tribute not only to Nicole and Katherine, but to their families and to their schools as well.

Hosted by Christopher Newport University, the Governor’s School for Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts will be held July 5, 2009 to August 1, 2009, and is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and participating school.

Congratulations also to Erin Burns, NBS ’95, who has graduated from medical school at the University of South Carolina. Erin has begun her residency through the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
