For 40 years North Branch audiences have experienced the magic of “St. George and the Dragon.” We all look forward to the quiet recitation of “The Shortest Day” poem by Susan Cooper followed by a rousing rendition of “Deck the Halls, the ancient horn dance of Abbotts Bromley, the sweet stomping of feet during “Villagers All,” the dramatic fights with the Giant and the Dragon, Saint George’s dramatic fall from stage, the moment the stars appear during the Sword Dance, the silliness the doctor and his sidekick bring, or the final moment when Saint George arises and calls for a dance. During the season of the shortest days, this pageant, indeed, helps to drive the darkness away.
